Some people need to know the meaning of ‘shade’, and how it works. Jiyong was asked a question, an unnecessary question (I don’t understand why the interviewer had to specifically mention those two groups); and all he said was ‘we make our own music’. That, ladies and gents, isn’t shade; he spoke the truth.

I think the problem with some fans is that those specific groups do have members that make their music. Could range from lyrics and composing and some way or another having a say in their solo album with the producing.
But the thing is that the liberty of doing music will never ever be the same between those companies. It took shinee 8 years to have a title song written by one of them and some exo members do write some songs but sm would never give them a free ride in creativity. Never. It’s just a different way of managing. It is SM’s fault that the general public think that about their artists tbh.
And it’s not that he said they are bad musicians or anything. It’s just a fact. It’s how he see it.
And yes there are many groups that compose their own songs. But the man asked specifically of those groups.

Thank you! Didn’t Jonghyun compose his album or something? I was floored by the music on his album. Also, I’m pretty some of the guys in Exo know how to make music, but just aren’t given the chance. With BB, ever since their debut, their music making skills was what always set them apart from other groups. I remember reading that they used to be called ugly, so what did people like? Their music and the fact that it’s almost always made by them. I just thought he basically said that the fact that they always make their own music gave them an edge. There’s no way gd would have answered this question that wouldn’t have made some fans angry. It is what it is.

Yeah, Jonghyun wrote his solo album and has written for multiple artists including EXO. I agree when you say that SM doesn’t let their artists take control who produces and writes their content. In the end, it falls onto them when the authenticity of their artists is questioned. I personally see the majority of people taking the statement as an attack when really it wasn’t like that. GD never stated that that the two other groups were untalented. All he said was Big Bang writes their own content. And by saying this, it’s honestly the only way the statement could’ve been made without offending people. He never mentioned the other two groups in his answer.
